He claims to be the fulfillment of this passage and to be the kind of Messiah it describes (4:21). The transformation of the notion of "Messiah" from that of a warrior to this understanding of the kingdom is graphically symbolized at the time of the Passover feast by his humble entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey (Matt. 21:1-9; Zech. 9:9).

Perhaps the most provocative action is when a paralytic is brought to him. Jesus tells the paralytic that his sins are forgiven. This causes the scribes to think, "Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" (Mark 2:7). Jesus responds,
